Diabetes mellitus, or simply diabetes, is one of the most rampant health problems in the world. Even the seemingly healthy person can be hit by this disease. And if left uncheck, it could actually be a cause of death. But how does one acquire diabetes?

Actually diabetes is a disordered metabolism syndrome, which is caused by either hereditary or environmental factors (in some cases, it is a combination of both). This would result to an irregularity in blood sugar levels causing hyperglycemia. Normally, our body regulates and controls the sugar level in our blood using a complex interaction of a number of chemicals and hormones in the body, especially the hormone insulin which is produced in the pancreas. The high glucose levels in our blood may be caused by the defects in insulin secretion or insulin action.

Medical studies show that Type 1 diabetes mellitus (also known as ‘juvenile diabetes’ since it represents a big number of diabetes cases among children) occurs as your body loses insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas. Eventually, this loss would lead to a deficiency of insulin inside our body. As of the moment, there are no known cures or preventive measures for type 1 diabetes. But for the early stages, replacement of insulin coupled with careful monitoring of blood sugar levels (with the use of blood testing monitors) serve as principal treatment. Perhaps the best prevention method for type 1 diabetes mellitus is lifestyle adjustments (having proper diet and regular exercise). Once the disease spreads, however, diet and exercise can no longer reverse the disease’s progress. For this reason, a diabetes screening is of utmost importance, especially for people who have several risk factors like obesity, family history of diabetes, and high risk ethnicity.Testing varies depending on your location. It may include blood glucose test, fasting blood glucose test, and the more formal glucose tolerance test. Some medical conditions are said to have been caused, or at least associated, with diabetes. These include high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, polycystic ovary syndrome, chronic pancreatitis, coronary artery disease, cystic fibrosis, among other medical conditions.
The people who are pre-diagnosed with diabetes should undergo regular routine tests for complications. Treatments like insulin intake (which could be from subcutaneous injections to insulin pumps) must be continued indefinitely. Sufficient patient training, awareness, proper diabetes care and discipline are all important. If treatments prove to be burdensome for patients, insulin supplement may be done in a non-physiological manner.

The goal is to bring down the glucose levels as safely as possible closer to the normal levels (which is 80-120mg/dl). Patients with blood glucose levels as high as 600 mg/dl or above should be given immediate medical attention (these levels are still not life-threatening, although they are usually accompanied by discomfort and frequent urination that could lead to dehydration). At a certain point, blood levels may drop to an unhealthy level which could lead to hypoglycemia. Patients experiencing hypoglycemia may experience episodes of unconsciousness or seizures and must be treated right away.

Diabetes is a serious medical condition that should be given attention to. And while there are a number of factors that could trigger this disease, one can still prevent the onset of diabetes or at least keep it under control.

In order to do this, you have to have a clear mindset. Diabetes care is a long term and round-the-clock commitment to manage your diabetes so your full and undivided attention is needed. It would be helpful if you make a sort of diabetes management plan (which includes schedules of checkups and physician appointments) so that you will have a guide in your fight against diabetes. The efforts you exert could actually save your life—if you control the disease, the disease will not control you. So start lowering your risk of getting serious and life-threatening complications.

Your weight plays an important role in your overall well-being. Add to that the fact that obesity are strongly linked to diabetes. If you must, try to lose some weight. Studies have proven that a mere 10 percent reduction in your body weight could actually lower your fasting blood sugar level on an average of 50 percent. You can lose some pounds by having a healthy diet and regular exercise. Skipping meals is not a good idea—the key here is to nourish your body with adequate levels of nutrients. Exercise is of equal importance. We all know that regular physical activity helps us in maintaining a healthy weight or even losing some extra pounds. What some of us don’t realize is that exercise can also improve insulin sensitivity thereby controlling our blood glucose level. Checking physical manifestations would also be helpful. Regularly check your feet for cuts, blisters, sores, redness, or swelling. High amount of sugar in the blood could destroy essential nerves in our feet. This could reduce the blood flow in our lower extremities (especially the feet), which could eventually lead to serious infections (or worse, amputation). To prevent such foot problems, wash your feet with lukewarm water daily. After washing, be sure to dry your feet gently, especially between the toes.

Another essential task in diabetes care is controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. If these two elements team up with high sugar levels in your blood, then you are sure to feel their devastating power. These can damage your blood vessels leading to heart attack or stroke. To keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control, again we go back to the food we eat (proper diet) and the physical activities that we do (regular exercise).

As we have mentioned earlier, you have to be committed in taking control of your diabetes. Stress factors could easily discourage you from continuing. But if you stop halfway, all the progress that you have made will go down to waste. You will be in a far worse condition than you were before. If you have queries, do not hesitate to ask your physician or nutritionist. Learning more about the disease will make you find a way to gain control over it.

One of the highlight in a woman’s life is the time when she is given the chance to have a life within her body. However, during this moment when every woman should enjoy their womanhood, some are faced with tough health problem known as gestational diabetes which is a temporary state that occurs only during pregnancy. Studies show that at least two to four percent of pregnant women possess great risk of accumulating the problem which may not only endanger the life of the mother but including the innocent child within her womb.

If family members have a history of diabetes and if the child on her previous pregnancy has some form of birth defect then there is a big chance that the mother may develop gestational diabetes. Although this is a serious case, most mothers can get by fine during the whole pregnancy period because of proper diet and exercise. In view of the fact that diet plays a crucial role in combating the sickness, it is not advice that women would create their own set of diet guides. They have special dietary needs to ensure the condition of the child therefore in order to uphold proper health of mothers therefore seeking the help of a physician or health care provider in order to create gestational diabetes diet.

When suffering from diabetes, the body does not produce the right amount of insulin or perhaps the insulin do not properly work within the body. This condition will augment the level of blood sugar which poses great risk on both the health of the mother and the child. Therefore, controlling the level of blood sugar within the body is one important step to take.

Moreover, carbohydrate also plays a big role in the gestational diabetes diet plan. Carbohydrates that you get from the foods you eat turn into glucose once it enters the body. Although glucose is naturally healthy, it has an unfavorable effect in terms of insulin level so careful planning of meals is necessary. Most women suffering from gestational diabetes are advice to do carbohydrate counting so they could keep track of the quantity of carbs they put in their mouth each day. It is recommended that pregnant should consume the same amount at the same time day by day as to keep the blood sugar within the appropriate range.

Untreated gestational diabetes can spell trouble for the baby; the following are the possible effects of it to the unborn:

• Being extra fat and big when born that normal delivery is not possible.
• Baby may suffer from low blood glucose
• May be troubled breathing
• Other Serious health problems.
• The kick count may be lesser than the normal rate
• Baby may grow differently
• Increased rate for the development for type 2 diabetes
• Birth defects
• Macrosomia
• Hypoglucemia

Take care of your health for your baby’s future. It is you that determine who the baby is going to be, act with caution and care.

Diabetes is the condition wherein the ability of the body to create and make use of insulin is affected. Sufferers of this health condition have a high risk in developing heart disease, blindness, neurological disease, kidney failure, and various complications which are taking its toil to about 16 million of Americans. The most severe kind of diabetes is known as the Type 1 or juvenile onset diabetes.

The start of juvenile diabetes should not create extreme panic to the sufferer because with discipline, the problem isn’t hard to treat. To work personally with your doctor will equip yourself with the needed knowledge and information that could be a big help in the near future. Watch your blood sugar levels each day; learn the time when it gets high and low as to avoid problems with hypoglycemia that is a case when the blood sugar are too low that the body do not get the right amount of energy. The frightening condition of ketoacidosis may also take place when the blood becomes extremely acidic due to the increase of toxic ketones within the body. Such toxic is produced during events when diabetic’s glucose as well as insulin level is not appropriately balanced, otherwise when the body is subjected to abrupt physical stress created by accident. These are only a few short term effects of juvenile onset diabetes.

There are long term effects which brings huge problem to the sufferer. It can meddle with the affairs of their every day life. One complication is the damage incurred to the eyes that is the leading cause of blindness in United States alone. Simply count 10 years from the day when a physician confirmed that the patient is suffering from juvenile onset diabetes then after some time almost 50 percent of sufferers will develop eye disorders. This condition is known as diabetic retinopathy that makes capillaries which supplies blood down to the retina to become weak thus will affect proper vision. Other problems that may take place includes damages the kidney, nervous system, and circulatory/cardiovascular systems. It will as well make the body receptive to infections. As observe cuts on the skin may heal slowly and these people may always complain about yeast infections, gum problems, mouth infections and urinary tract dilemmas. High blood pressure, heart disease, stokes, heart attack, along with cramps, ulcers, gangrene. - are only few of other possible health problems that may occur due to the complication brought by juvenile onset diabetes. Moreover, damage to the blood vessel can end up in greater mess like kidney failure.

All these complication may be prevented if the patient would act right ahead during the first sign of juvenile onset diabetes. Among the symptoms to watch out for are nausea, extreme thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, weight loss, frequent vaginal infections, blurred vision, and impotence in men. If you start noticing one or two of these symptoms, ask your doctor’s advice right ahead. Once diagnosed, it is merely a matter of time and dedication before you learn how to take charge over the disease.

Are you always feeling thirsty and you notice that you’re always running to the bathroom lately? Beware, since you might be suffering from diabetes isipidus which is created by the deficiency of hormone within the pituitary gland located below the brain. This is a very rare condition which may take place when the kidney would no longer do their usual function of conserving water while trying to filter blood. It is the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) better known as vasopressin that takes control over the conservation of water. The ADH is processed within the area of the brain better known as hypothalamus. After its production, it will transport down to the small gland which is the pituitary gland where it will be stored.

Central diabetes insipidus is experienced by a person when there is a problem with the hypothalamus or else with the pituitary gland due to infection, dead injury, surgery and tumor. There are instances when the condition is caused by certain drugs like for example amphotericin B, llithium, and demeclocycline. Also, too high amount of calcium known as hypocalcaemia and kidney disease refer to as polycystic kidney disease is also some of the underlying factor of the condition.

Diabetes insipidus treatment includes drinking enough water in order to replace the lost liquid of the body. At the hospital, doctors may choose to administer dextrose and water or use IV fluid hyposmolar to hinder the occurrence of hyperglycemia. Doctors may compute how much water had been wasted based on the fact that almost 60% of body weight is water. For patient suffering from excessive thirst, desmopressin is given at least 2-3 times in a day. Checking electrolyte from time to time is also advised. Diabetes insipidus treatment may include pharmaceutical diabetes isipidus therapy comprises of nasal, subcutaneous, and oral use of vasopressin analogues. Do not self experiment with the condition; those people who studied the true nature of the diabetes isipidus should only at the right place to determine the medicine and treatment necessary. This condition may only be detected by means of neurosurgery or head trauma.

There is actually no exact dietary considerations that must be considered when treating diabetes insipidus although the accurate amount of salt and water that enters the body should be given due considerations. Any person also who suffer the same fate should take special precautions when traveling; the problem may be a little too overwhelming since some patience may vomit during the ride while other may experience annoying diarrhea.

Try to go away from drinks which are extremely high in sodium which include soft drinks which may aggravate the condition so it is better to just opt for water, this is one of the easiest kinds of Diabetes insipidus treatment. Be reminded that diabetes isipidus is different from diabetes mellitus although the two may call for frequent trip to the bathroom. The second is basically due to high blood sugar. When the sufferer notice that he is experiencing unquenchable thirst or if some of his family members noticed that there is a big change in the ability of the person to think properly, a doctor should be consulted right ahead.
